Using Software Overview - Lesson 4

As mentioned in the overview, site-building software can be categorised into two main types:

  • Site-building tools
  • Web Publishing Programs

Within the categories the level of technical ability required to use the software can vary dramatically. However, most software will allow you to build a professional site easily.

Site Building Tools

Site builders are software that allows you to rapidly create a web site by simply pointing and clicking. Some web hosting programs will include a basic site builder in their hosting package.

The obvious advantage of a site-building tool is rapid deployment. You can get your web site up and running in literally minutes. Another advantage is you do not need to learn any programming languages or how to use complex software. The downside is that you will be restricted to some extent with what you can do. That being said there are some fantastic site-building tools available which will handle pretty much every scenario you could think of for you web site.

Personally, we recommend Site Build It!. It is an awesome tool that not only allows you to build your site quickly, it also helps you with your marketing and profiting going forward.

Web Publishing Programs

Web publishing programs are powerful tools for building complex web sites. In most cases you will not even use half of what is available in these programs. Some common web publishing tools are Microsoft Frontpage, Macromedia Dreamweaver and NetObjects Fusion.

It takes time to learn how to use these tools and you will spend a disproportionate amount of time learning the tools to building your web site. So, unless you want to become a professional web designer yourself, you would be better of just using a site-builder or learning HTML.

Ok, so you are still keen on spending your money and buying some web publishing software. If you are still determined to go this route then our recommendation would be NetObjects Fusion. We haven't personally used the software but we know people who have and have given it rave reviews. It is apparently a lot easier and quicker to use than Dreamweaver.
